Most people who hike in Lamoille Canyon near Elko drive to the top of the canyon at 8,700 feet and trek their way up to one of the lakes. The Right Fork Lamoille Creek hike is a great alternative for people who want to see fall color after the upper canyon is past peak or if you just want to acclimate at a lower elevation before tackling the higher trails. It starts around 7,100 feet and goes up to 8,400 feet.
When we were there on Tuesday, October 8, the aspens on the hike were in the Getting Better stage at 40%. Even though some trees were peaking, there was still a lot of green, which is probably now starting to pop.
On the five-mile round trip hike, you’ll have dramatic views up canyon toward the glacial cirque. The trail follows the stream and travels past beaver ponds and fall foliage until you reach a hanging valley at trail’s end.
Watch the Weather
Important: Keep an eye on the weather. Snow is forecast from Wednesday night – Thursday night this week (October 16 – 17) with at least a couple of inches of snow possible. The best times to hike will be Monday and Tuesday of this week before the storm gets here and then Saturday, October 19 and Sunday, October 20. Beyond that, continue to keep an eye on the weather to avoid fall snow storms. Also, winds from storms can blow off the leaves and cold temperatures, especially if they last for awhile, can freeze the leaves.
How to Find the Trail
The trailhead begins at Camp Lamoille. For more specific directions and detailed information about the hike, we recommend the book 50 Classic Hikes in Nevada by Mike White. The trail is harder to find higher up, and this book provides specific directions on how to stay on track.
