Lamoille Canyon near Elko is one of the most stunning places to view mountain scenery in Nevada. The canyon is especially breathtaking in the fall when the aspens are decked out in their yellow, orange, and red attire.
When we visited the canyon today, October 7, 2024, the color change was all over the map with some areas at peak and looking spectacular, other areas still green, and other places past peak.
The young aspens on the hillsides near the bottom of the canyon ranged from 30% (Getting Better) to one small area where they were near peak at 50%. There is still a lot of green by Camp Lamoille.
Thomas Creek Campground Fall Color
Up the road from the campground, red-orange trees are still keeping their color but some aspens are quickly progressing from red to brown.
The adult aspens on the hillside above Thomas Creek Campground have turned gold and orange. They’re Near Peak at 60% and look amazing with the dramatic mountain backdrop. There are still some green trees here, too, so color may last for at least another week. The campground itself is in the Getting Better stage at 40%, with a mixture of yellows and greens.

Is There Any Color Left on Upper Lamoille Canyon Road?
The nature trail, Terraces Picnic Area, and areas up to road’s end are past peak, but there is a stretch of hillside on the right that still remains striking thanks to young aspens turning gold. One lonely yellow aspen at the road’s end trailhead brightens up the parking lot.
Autumn Color Still to Come
The bottom of the canyon by the Powerhouse Picnic Area and across the highway should start showing off color in the next week to ten days at the most. Right now, it’s Patchy at 5%.
Visit Now Before the Color Goes Away
The bottom line? There’s still a lot of autumn color left to see in Lamoille Canyon. Presuming we don’t get any snowstorms or windstorms in the next week or so, the foliage should look lovely for at least another 7 to 10 days.  We recommend you find a good excuse to visit this area soon.  Â
