Falling for Kings Canyon

The foliage on the Kings Canyon Falls trail by Carson City is looking lovely. It’s in the Getting Better stage (40%) with a mixture of green and yellow, according to professional photographer Patrick Wilkes. He hiked to the lower falls on the evening of October 22, 2024.

The lower falls are a short fall color hike (1/4 mile) and ideal for anyone who doesn’t want to hike too far or if you don’t have a lot of time. The hike to Upper Kings Canyon Falls is more of an effort (I’d call it a moderate hike). Patrick didn’t have time to take the trek to the upper falls, but the willows and greenery around the upper creek probably are taking on some color now.

Patrick says that the water level at the first falls is low, as would be expected this time of year, but it’s still a serene sight.

If you’re planning on venturing to the falls this weekend, remember that Carson City will be crowded on Saturday for the Nevada Day Parade, and Carson Street through town will be closed until after 2 p.m. Directions to get to the Kings Canyon hike are in this link.

Kings Canyon Fall Color Update 2024

Lower Waterfall Hike – Getting Better (40%). Expect more color here over the next week but the National Weather Service predicts a storm coming in by Sunday evening and lasting until Tuesday. The cold temps and wind may impact the color change here, but we’re crossing our fingers for the best.

Upper Kings Canyon Falls – No report. If you hike to the upper falls, send us a report with photographs. Here’s how to file a report.
