Woodfords Canyon, just over the California state line on Highway 88, often gets neglected in terms of fall color. Most of the focus is on Hope Valley. Yet, when Hope Valley is past peak, Woodfords Canyon can provide a fall foliage fix to leaf peepers in the area.
As of Saturday, October 19, upper Woodfords Canyon is Past Peak, but there’s still color showing up around Hope Valley Resort Campground and the day use area just down Highway 88 from the campground.
Mid-Canyon Autumn Color
Mid-canyon some of the color is past peak, but there’s still enough green to offer the promise of a fall foliage show possibly by Nevada Day weekend, October 25 -27. The National Weather Service detailed forecast calls for colder weather and possibly some rain or snow at higher elevations on Friday, October 25, so that could affect the color change here.
Lower Woodfords Canyon Update
In the lower canyon, the leaves are still lime green and looking healthy, so this area could look quite nice in a week or less. The trees at this elevation are often protected if it’s colder up high, so there’s less of a risk that the leaves will freeze when they’re green.
While you’re in the lower canyon, stop by Mad Dog Café for sandwiches, soups, baked goods, and ice cream. I’m especially fond of their breakfast bagel sandwich called The Face, with avocado, egg, bacon, tomato, and cilantro.
Woodfords Canyon Fall Color Update 2024
Upper Canyon – Fading, but still some good color.
Mid-Canyon – Mixture of Past Peak and green trees.
Lower-Canyon – Trees mostly still lime-green. Looking healthy and ready to put on a show.
Nice article I wish you had told me how to get there. I know where Woodfords is, but I don’t know where the canyon is.
Hi, Joanne. Thanks for your comment. Woodford’s Canyon is the canyon that stretches from Woodfords to Hope Valley. As you drive from Woodfords to Hope Valley or Hope Valley to Woodfords on Highway 88 you’ll be in the canyon.
