When the cottonwoods are in full fall color, they look like umbrellas of gold. One of the best places to see them is at Dayton State Park.
I checked on the progress of the cottonwoods at Dayton State Park on my way back from the spectacular fall color at Kingston Canyon last Thursday, October 16, 2025. At that time, overall, they were only in the Getting Better stage at 30%, but the trees that were turning were Near Peak. Since that was a week ago today, I expect that they may have progressed into the 50% or greater range and may even be Near Peak.

I would expect the trees in the park to be looking good from now through at least Nevada Day weekend, October 31 – November 2, 2025. We do have some wind coming up with this next storm over the weekend, but hopefully the leaves aren’t far enough along yet to blow them off the trees.
Dayton State Park is a mellow place for families or people looking for an easy hike or to enjoy a picnic under the trees. You can stroll down to the Carson River, where reflections of the fall color in the water make for pretty photos. You’ll also find a campground at the park.

If You’re Going
The park is located about 20 minutes east of Carson City, on Highway 50 in Dayton, Nevada. On weekdays after 4 p.m., there can be a lot of rush hour traffic heading from Carson City to Dayton, so time your trip accordingly.
